Through a survey in three cities in the eastern part of the country, we analyzed how media literate young people are. The analysis is part of the activities of the project “Media literacy – for honor without stress, find the right news” of the non-governmental organization Media Plus in partnership with Kanal 77.
Today, in the 21st century, being literate does not mean only knowing how to read and write. There are various types of literacy, but what is important in today’s conditions and should be mandatory, is media literacy. We get most of the information through the media, so people are considered literate if they know how to use the media and know how to critically read and understand media content, that is, to be media literate.
Although media literacy is taught in the third grade, at least that’s what the authorities claim, still a good part of the citizens, especially young people, are media illiterate. According to surveys conducted by Channel 77 in three cities in the eastern part of Macedonia, this is partially confirmed.
“I don’t know how to tell you, I have no idea”, were most of the answers to the question – Do they know what it means to be media literate?
