On 25 October 2023, the RESIS Institute (www.resis.mk) will hold an online debate dedicated to the topic of “Community Media and Pluralistic Democracy”, at which it will present the findings of the research conducted last year concerning the “Communication Needs of People with Disabilities from the Eastern and Southeastern Regions,” as part of the project titled “Encouraging Civic Engagement In Local Governance – LocalActiveMedia”, the main goal of which is to improve access to the public sphere for vulnerable groups of citizens and local communities in different regions of the country.
In the first phase of the project, the RESIS Institute developed a concept for a specific model of online community media in the RN Macedonia, and launched the LokalAktiv web platform (www.lokalaktiv.mk), through the joint action of local civil society organizations from the Eastern and Southeastern regions. LocalActive, as a community media platform is a key element in the push for democratization and the rule of law because it puts in the spotlight the local and neglected topics that are important to the local communities. One of the main goals of LocalActive is to contribute to the development of participatory and non-profit journalism focused on uncovering topics and issues that have been neglected by other media, as well as to enable various groups of citizens to actively influence the strengthening of local pluralistic democracy.
In the next phase of the “LocalActiveMedia” project, RESIS will work on creating an editorial structure and on content production for the existing LocalActive platform, as well as on creating a new online media outlet of the local communities and citizens of the Vardar region. The project is supported by the USA’s National Endowment for Democracy.
