About the Agency

The Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services is independent regulatory body in charge for regulation of televisions, radio and audiovisual media services on demand, whereby it also has limited competences over the operators of electronic communication networks (cable operators) and issuers of printed media.

The process for independent regulation of private radio and television stations and the Public Broadcast Service started back in 1997, with the founding of the Broadcast Council as regulatory body. In 2014, upon the entering into force of the Law on Audio and Audiovisual Media Services, the Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services continued its work as its legal successor. Two bodies were established within the Agency: Director and Council of the Agency.

At the 15th Session held on 28 March 2019, the Agency Council adopted the Media Literacy Policy. The document was prepared by the EAVI Secretary General Paolo Cello, as part of the JUFREX project on “Enhancing Judicial Expertise on the Freedom of Expression and the Media in Southeast Europe”. Before its adoption, the document was made available on the websites avmu.mk and mediumskapismenost.mk, was put up for an open public debate and its text was forwarded to all the members of the Media Literacy Network.

The Agency prepared Program for Promoting Media Literacy in Republic of Macedonia with expert support, directed towards development and promotion of the media literacy.

The basic goals of the Program include rising of the awareness of the concept for media literacy, contributing to understanding thereof by the citizens and improving the conditions for civil and democratic participation.
